So I was over at the Singapore toys and comics convention like all other avid toy and manga enthusiasts. (...)

So I was over at the Singapore toys and comics convention like all other avid toy and manga enthusiasts. It’s pretty awesome we have something like this once in a while just to liven up our lives otherwise spent in solitude hurhur.

Nintendo was there in full blast with it’s WiiFit showcase as well as a few DS games, including the unreleased guitar hero world tour which was surprising. If ya haven’t seen that god awful DS ad, check this out on gametrailers. The wiifit booths drawn the most crowd, with kids lining up to try out that hulla hoop or soccer ball heading whatever. Having seen the wiifit balance board for the first time, I must say it’s pretty easy to cheat on it. I have seen kids get away from just wiggling their body bleh.

Star Wars was out represented by Hasbro, and they had the second biggest booth after Nintendo, and boy did it draw quite a crowd. There was even a queue for the exhibition albeit to prevent overcrowding. They showcased several toy models like the AT walker and the jedi starfighter. Oh, and they have a bunch of chibi toys that were absolutely cute.

Chibi Star Wars! Liven up my day anytime.

All hail the Imperial Army

But hey, we are otakus, you guys ain’t here for some kinda lame kiddy toy! Illustrations were aplenty with several studios setting up booths. I didn’t go to all of them, but one notable studio worth mentioning would be Imaginary Friends. For the uninformed, Imaginary Friends is a local illustration studio specializing in really slick looking 3d and 2d artwork. These god-like beings have descended to the land of the deprived to sell some of their awesome artwork. Art prints were going for 10 bucks each. They were also selling two artbooks, Imaginary Redux and some other one which slipped my name at 25 and 35 bucks respectively. If you are visiting later today, do make an effort to check out some of their work. You can find out more about them from their website as well from Zer0’s blog post here.

The gal on the outermost left was the fastest selling artwork

Bandai had three chibi gundams guarding the front. Apparently, they were modelled after the characters from The Romance of the Twelve kingdoms apparently, but i only recognised Liu Bei… Ah well, but they were real kawaii.

Chuang Yi publishing was also selling their manga selections at discounted prices at 10 percent. Although do take note that Kinokuniya is currently having a storewide discount of 20 percent for all customers, so If I were you, I would make a beeline for that. Sorry CY!

Several other notable booths are Gary Erskine, an illustrator for Virgin Comics in the States. He was doing a live demonstration and I must say, it was refreshing to check out illustrations that weren’t limited to just manga or anime. NUS comics was there as well selling 2nd hand manga. 501st garrison was also there with several cute troopers hurhur.
Do forgive the awful pictures I took with my phone cam. Gotta get a better camera sigh…
Next week’s CosFest! Any person who calls himself an otaku should make a trip down to downtown east. I just hope the MC isn’t the same guy again *prays…

All right, ever since tsubaki from add introduced tf2 on his blog, i have been quite the enthusiast, clocking a few hours each day for the egames servers. It is really great too that valve is continuing to keep the game fresh for old timers by releasing updates for the myriad of classes. They just recently announced a massive update for the pyro class, a seemingly underpowered class due to his short range flamethrower. The downside is the influx of hordes of pyros when the update comes this coming thursday.

Anyway, Valve has just recently released the new Meet the Sniper video, just one of the many hilarious Meet the “class” series with its ostensible puns and wicked sense of humour.

Kudos to Valve for making an effort towards battling piracy and making this game worth our buck!
By the way, ya can find me with the moniker Pyoro over at the Starhub or Egames server. A word of caution, i suck at it…

Woot I have just playtested the recently released Devil May Cry 4 demo for the PC and I must say it’s quite a blast. You start out with two modes. The first of which is Exterminator, where you are allocated ten minutes to play through a single mission, presumably the one after the attack on the cathedral. Now, depending on how fast you get through the mission, you can possibly complete the entire mission in a single play through. This mode basically showcases the gameplay mechanics of Nero and the Devil Bringer, a demon arm nero uses to make mince meat out of his enemies. If you have played the previous games in the series, then you will fit right into dmc4. You get trapped in an area, whacked off a couple of poor foes, barrier disappears and repeat process. It is a formula that has been the hallmark of the dmc series, although it is showing its age, with games like ninja gaiden and god of war upping the stakes with far more innovative gameplay mechanics and compelling stories.

The second mode, aptly named Executioner, pins you against several ice creatures before unleashing this fire demon called Berial which apparently suffers from ADD. Those ice guys are a bit tougher but as long as ya keep spamming the devil bringer ya should be fine. The difficulty comes when Berial comes marching along. Just keep jumping and slashing away at him and use the devil bringer when he’s done. Take advantage of his stupidity and collect all the green orbs that lay in his wake.

The demo also comes with a performance test which ya can use to determine whether your rig can run the game. The graphics are pretty much similar to the console versions but will take quite a chunk of power from ya system. Personally I use an 8800GT but even that is not enough to run it on Very High. I had to settle for High and it still looked just as great. My only complaint are the controls. It’s god awful to play using the keyboard. Use a controller. Both the xbox and ps3 controllers are compatible with the PC. If you are a dmc fan, chances are you would already had completed the console version. If you are just looking for an excuse to try out some hack and slash action game, dmc4 is for ya. You can download the demo here .

I will be starting a retrospective on metal gear solid in view of the impending release of the awesomeness that is mgs4 on the 12th of June, which coincidentally happens to be 10 years after the release of the original MGS on the PSX.

Gametrailers.com has an excellent retrospective on it as well. Check it out here.

MGS begun with a new protagonist code-named Solid Snake who was sent to Shadow Moses by Colonel Roy Campbell in an attempt to rescue the DARPA chief and the President of the some weapons organisation. He also had to foil an attempt to start a nuclear war instigated by Snake’s former unit FOXHOUND comprising of revolver Ocelot, Sniper Wolf, Vulcan Raven, Psycho Mantis and Decoy Octopus led by Liquid Snake, Snake’s twin brother. The game started out with the memorable elevator scene when snake took off his scuba gear and revealed his pixelated macho manliness. There were many breathtaking cutscences to come, like the battle with Hind D chopper and the gray fox single hand assault against Rex.

Hind D

Eventually when Snake found his way to the two hostages, they somehow mysteriously died of heart attacks, a result of Naomi Hunter meddling with Snake’s body with a virus known as FOXDIE. During the confrontation with Ocelot, a mysterious cyborg ninja sliced off Ocelot’s arm, a significant turning point for the storyline later on.Thereafter, he met up with Roy Campbell’s hot niece Meryl who apparently had some kinda training against sexual attraction, but come off it she had the hots for Snake the moment she got psyched by Psycho Mantis. Speaking of which. I heard Kojima added some kinda of joke in that boss fight with the mantis and completely screwed the player up. Didn’t happen to me in the PC version though.

He also had help from a programmer of metal gear with the moniker Otacon but not before a confrontation with a mysterious cyborg ninja who went completely ballistic at the end and starting hammering himself. Weird. Turns out the ninha was Gray Fox, one of Snake’s former comrades.

First of cyborg ninjas to come

After a series of boss fights and twists, Snake had to use a key card to deactivate metal gear, but it ended up arming the nuclear device for launch. Liquid Snake, by now revealed as the true antagonist sought to prove he was the superior clone to Big Boss, the source of Liquid and Snake’s genes. Piloting the aweomeness metal gear rex, he was making minced meat out of Snake when gray fox leapt to his aid and destroyed Rex’s rader but not before being squashed by Liquid like a bug. Using an array of weapons including my favourite the stinger missiles, Snake took down Rex and both Liquid and Solid Snake took off their tops to reveal their pixelated muscles. Now, if Liquid haven’t been monologuing, I am sure Liquid would have taken him down. But nooooo, the laws of villainhood dictates he must go on a rant on how the world was unfair to him etc. So he had his ass handed over by Snake in both a fist fight as well as a car chase later when FOXDIE decided enough was enough and killed Liquid Snake.

Orewai METAL GEAR!

MGS gameplay was unique during its time and sparked out a chain of clones which I shall not name (splinter cell sucks). Its hide and seek element was especially well executed, repercussions are punishing and gave players great reason not to run and gun like some kinda other stupid shooter (BLACK). It was the first MGS game to introdue first person perspective as well as a senstive camera angle system when crouched against a wall, not to mention an excellent storyline with surprising plot twists which still had fans dumbfounded (wth are the Patriots!). It was my first foray into the world of Metal Gear and had me hooked. It was also the main reason why I bought a ps2 later, apart from ffx, but I digress. hurhur

Kknm is having a fairly interesting event these days. Chocolate Coronet vs Melon Pan

In summary, every $30 gives you a chance to vote, as well as a shot at the lucky draw.

Here are the prizes for the Lucky Draw:
1st Prize: Nintendo DS Lite
2nd Prize: Lucky Star Nendroid Set (Konata and Kagami)
3rd Prize: 6 Months Subscription to Megami Magazine
4 x Consolation Prizes: $25 Vouchers from Nandemoya

The prizes look great though. However, I just cannot think of what I would possibly want that can add up to $30. Maybe I can buy some birthday gifts.

KKNM still owes me one preorder though, wonder if it’s here yet. It’s been delayed since months ago. In fact, the last time I promoted their event, and went for it… I didn’t get my blogger’s gift! something about out of stock. Aha. I’ll probably still go down for their event again though. Just to look see look see.
