Episode 5 sees the potential unravelling of the carefully hidden history of Madelein and Fantine. At the same time, Eponine is not too happy that Toujou and Cosette seem to be getting on together well.

For the first time, Cosette finds out that her mom has been sending her letters. The problem is that the Thenediars of course isn’t going to read the letter to her. Neither is she able to read the letter herself. This episode skips another few years, and focuses entirely on Cosette’s development as a character.

Once again, the episode divides its focus into 2, one touching on Cosette adopting a stray puppy, the other introducing Inspector Javert and Madelein’s possibly darker past.

Continuing where it left off in the last episode, we see briefly what happens to Cosette as well as Alain, even as the show fast forward three years as well, to show everybody slightly more grown up. While the episode might be named “Jean Valjean’s Secret”, we’re only offered a brief look into Jean Valjean’s background.

Nippon Animation’s anime adaptation of Les Miserables currently does look good. It’s definitely targeted towards kids, there’s no denying that. But I’m very sure it’ll be good enjoyment for adults. Even the first episode was well done.

Every since Lu Perry (very good fansubber I must add) highlighted this anime, it became a “must watch” for me. The pictures (more after the break, and provided by Lu Perry), just grabbed my attention, and the words that it was “very emotional” just clinched the deal for me.

The story takes place in early 19th century France. Cosette is the daughter of Fantine. Unable to secure a job as a single mother, Fantine decides to pay an inn keeper couple to look after Cosette, while she tries to find a job on her own. However, being cruel and corrupt, the couple treat Cosette in a manner Fantine can never imagine…
