Anime Season First Impressions

So the first week of the new anime season has come and gone. Here are some thoughts to some of the anime that has premiered over the last week.

Slayers Revolution
Ahh lina inverse, the boobless protangonist. Although I had only watched the first season when I was a kid, I was incredibly excited for the new season as it brings together the old cast including everybody’s favourite Megumi Hayashibara! what’s there not to be excited for? Well the first episode was completely insane and was reminiscent of the old series. The boobless name calling, the dumb as ever Gourry (which btw i always mistaken for Gary) and the infamous Dragon Slave. I particularly enjoyed the omg i broke my sword scenes. Anybody who has watched any of the previous seasons owe it to yourself to put this on your must watch anime list!

Sekerei
Coming into this one without any background knowledge, I must say I was intrigued by the backstory behind this. A worthless dude who gets dragged into an underground battle league of some sort to obtain “ascension”? How original! But seriously, the storyline was a tad more interesting than typical anime from this genre. One could theoretically be interested in the premise behind the battle league and enjoy the fanservice at the same time.I was also surprised by the quality of the animation , given the track record of fanservice anime with abysmal animation (ikkitousen comes to mind). My only peeve: cut down on the oversized breasts please.

Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto Natsu no Sora
Wow, how do i start with this… When I first saw the screenshots on RandomC, I thought those were some pretty pretty scenes. I tell ya, those screens don’t bring the animation justice. This anime was meant to be watched in HD to boot. I spent most of the episode simply gawking at at the beautifully rendered backgrounds. With 12 episode slated, you have to wonder whether they can keep up with the excellent quality. As for the story itself, it’s about a mage named Sora in a small town called Bie who was called up to study magic in Tokyo. Most of the episode was spent depicting her last day in town, which gave the director plenty of opportunities to throw in a tonne of beautifully rendered backgrounds. Credit should also be given to the voice actress behind Sora, Kana Hanazawa. Her voice was cute and she delivered a solid performance, bringing out the appropriate emotions for the varying scenes. My favourite was the scene with her mum when she was told she was going to Tokyo. I also loved the opening song; “fly away” by THYME. Gotta find out the release date for that…

Birdy the Mighty Decode
Apart from the weird name (who in the world calls herself Birdy), the first episode was pretty good. You have a typical school kid who’s what every parent dreams of, studious, unfazed by idol magazines and goes out to adandoned houses looking for god know what. On one of his trips, he encounters this ehh some kinda Federal Space Investigator called Birdy, who’s actually an alien posing as this HOT idol Arita Shion chasing after an ugly space villain with the moniker Geega. Geega uses Senkawa as a hostage, Birdy ends up chopping him into half (aww gross) and somehow she does something which saves him but ends up become linked together somehow. This kinda reminded me of Eureka 7 for some reason. Probably because of the relationship between Birdy and Senkawa. The premise behind the show is pretty interesting. Definitely recommended for those fans of space fantasy and typical boy girl stuck together situations.
