Shakugan no Shana Special OVA

Like Danny, I totally fell in love in the series again just watching the first few seconds of this OVA. It’s like having all those good memories of the series come back to you. I still have the op and ed playing in the lists of mp3s that I play too. That said, don’t expect any shana action (moe or not). It’s more side story type of episode, like Hectate-tan with much humour involved. I like.

So the story happens somewhere after Shana kills the Aizen siblings and before the arrival of Khamshin.

Main Character of the day Ogata wakes up from dreaming of Tanaka proposing to her, before remember that it’s school outing day.

Thus begins the school outing, with the whole crew sittings at the back of the bus. Everybody is grouped into one group, and this includes shana, kazumi, ogata, Tanaka, sato, ike and yuuji. No problems, except that Ike has a history of motion sickness… oh ho.

Arriving at the first attraction, a temple, Tanaka and Sato immediately races up the steps. The group then hears from the priestess that actually the pair that runs up the stairs together will be happily married. A jealous Ogata then takes off after them. Kazumi and shana too quarrel over yuuji before dragging him up the stairs without hearing the priestess say that if three people go up the stairs, it’ll just result in a complicated relationship.

Ogata arrives at the top, only to find to her horror Takako and Sato looking like just the perfect couple.

Next up, are the onsen hot springs. Just that due to an unreasonable tourist, there’s a shortage of rooms. And it has to be Yuuji’s group that has to share a room. But it’s okie… cause there’s a divider right?

Guys have their traditions at hot sprints. Peeping. Girls have their traditions too. Prevent peeping.

Thus the boys are foiled by the girls wearing swimsuits, and soon made to leave, except for ike and yuuji. Soon after, the girls take off their swimsuits and engage in girl talk, all the while being eavesdropped by ike who unfortunately soon faints from the heat.

Back in the room though, sato and takako are missing. Looking in a guidebook that they were reading, Ogata assumed that they went off to a lover’s spot and are doing unimaginable things there. Immediately she rushes out after them, missing Sato and Takako who are playing ping pong.

After dinner though, sees Sato and Takako pillow fighting. Ogata interrupts, surprising everyone that she wants to take part, but unfortunately gets part with yuuji. Just as Ogata throws a killer shot, Takako jumps in to save Sato. This upsets Ogato who stops playing immediately.

Unable to sleep at night, Ogata ends up visiting the hotspring where she meets Magary Daw, the rich tourist who took up the rooms. Margary Daw gives her advice to take action. Going back into the room, Ogata tries to wake Takako up, but through a series of mishaps, ends up mashing her butt into Ike instead.

In the end the next day, Takako comes over to console Ogata, but Takako once again totally misunderstands Ogata, and ends up just getting stones thrown at him.

End of school trip!

Thoughts

A very enjoyable OVA I must say. I guess if there’s anything you want to be disappointed about, is the lack of Shana. But make do.

It has the feel of lots of effort put in, many good jokes here and there, + your standard fanservice.

They even replaced the ED animation replacing Shana with Ogata, which I thought was a very cute touch.
