Seirei no Moribito – ep7
Balsa and Chagum end up renting a watermill as a place to settle down in. In fact, I can totally see Balsa, Tanda and Chagum forming a very lovable family already. (as if that will ever happen)
Balsa and Chagum are staying in an inn. Everything seemed peaceful, and even as Balsa gives Chagum a check over, she realises that the water spirit hasn’t stirred in quite awhile.
Meanwhile, the funeral for Chagum nearly comes to an end. The emperor orders for a statue of Chagum be created, even though traditionally only Emperors were given statues. This is in remembrance of the one whose life was lost as a sacrifice to prevent the drought.
Next day, we see Balsa and Chagum having a meal at a street hawker. Tanda joins in, but expresses his worries about Balsa eating in such an open area. To prove his worries wrong, Balsa proceeds to ask a guy nearby about Balsa the spear wielding women. Of course he proceeds to make a silly boast about how he drew Balsa while fighting her, all without realising who Balsa was.
For some reason, the hawker gives Tanda a meal different from what he ordered though It’s a dish that’s used to celebrate family. With different beans representing the father, mother and child.
Meanwhile, Shuga is taken off his task of interpreting the ancient texts. He cannot help but feel utterly useless, being unable to do anything for Chagum. At the same time, Torogai has sent the donkey back home, seemingly near to her destination.
Later on the roads, Tanda happens to mention that in most of her previous body guard cases, her business would have ended after thwarting the enemies. Later he also asks what would Balsa do to take care of Chagum, that it would be especially difficult.
Chagum also seems to be getting a bigger understanding of the value of money, and how much it would cost for Balsa to take care of him, even as he realised that even Tanda had started working from a very young age.
When Balsa and Chagum are on their on, she mentions that she needed to go pay rent for the place they are going to stay in. Chagum is flustered by the fact that one actually needed to pay for the place where one stayed in. In fact, Chagum catches Balsa paying the “landlord” a huge sum of money.
We see how people Shuga and Jin still feel very dearly in their heart for Chagum
In the end, Balsa and Chagum are going to stay in a water mill, which Chagum can’t believe they paid so much money for. However, he is fascinated that Balsa knew how to operate one.
Later that evening though, over dinner, Chagum suddenly thanks everyone for taking care of him, and that from now on he would live on his own. However, Balsa reminds him that she had promised his mom to take care of him. Besides, that are always people who would take care of abandoned kids like him without asking for any money. Chagum is so grateful that he can only tear.
However, just before the episode ends, we see Shuga discovering that the sign of the drought has not disappeared.
Thoughts
Chagum sure is an interesting character. Spoilt at times, yet trying to be sensible at times. And it’s interesting that he has managed to move so many people as well. And of course, the emperor’s love for his son comes across more clearly in this episode.
It also hints at how Balsa is taking such good care of Chagum because something similar happened to her. This is something I want to know more of.
Having the 3 beans represent Tanda, Balsa and Chagum would be such a lovely thought. Although I found it amusing that Balsa ate the seed representing the father. (I think)
I can’t help but feel that the show has tons of subtle hints that I’m missing out on. I guess it’ll all fall into place together as the show proceeds.
