Lucky Star – ep6 – Summer
It’s summer time! Of course that would include a car trip and a visit to the beach! This episode definitely improved in terms of pacing. The adaptation goes really well this time, choosing the right scenes to extend into an anime format.
First part to summer is definitely a car trip. Thus two drivers are needed: Kuroi and Yui. Tsukasa and Kagami are sacrificed into Yui’s car, a notorious speeder though she’s a traffic cop. Her devil speeding surfaces after she’s overtaken, creating a much exciting drift race.
Konata thinks that she’s being smart to choose Kuroi’s car. Except that Kuroi is horrendous with directions. Konata succeeds in not having motion sickness! (probably since Kuroi is seeking directions more than actually moving the car.
After booking into a hotel, it’s time for to change into swimsuits and go to the beach. Everybody has interesting fashions. And of course ms Konata has decided to wear a school swim suit. (from primary 6 in fact), complete with an inflatable ring. And of course Miyuki’s the sexiest.
Konata remains obsessed with anime references, comparing reality with anime. How nobody seems to be whacking watermelons and how Miyuki eyes don’t look all stupid when her glasses are taken off.
Meanwhile the two old ladies are enjoying the beach together, with Kuroi lamenting about how they both are single, without realising that Yui is married. The young girls have no summer romance either, which Kagami blames on Konata.
It’s lunch time, causing Tsukasa to lament about how icky it is to sit on a chair while wet. Somehow everybody thinks that the beach environment just makes all the food taste wonderful, even though they are all over-priced and taste horrible normally. This is something that Kagami just can’t accept.
Shower time is next, with both Kuroi and Konata totally owned by the cold water.
A conversation about sticky hair caused by UV rays and salt soon takes place, with Miyuki providing an enlightening explaination. As for Yui and Kuroi, there’s a drastic lack of chemistry, as both can only sit in the bath in awkward silence.
Meanwhile, Konata spots Miyuki still soaping herself up all alone. This triggers some galge game in her mind, and she soon places a bar of soap behind Miyuki. Kagami scolds Konata, causing Konata to miss Miyuki falling on the soap bar.
It all ends with a final discussion between the twin sisters about…. something that happens monthly to girls. It wouldn’t be too nice if it happens to you while you’re on a beach outing with everybody.
Night time means horror stories told by Konata. In fact, Tsukasa continues to be Konata’s victim even as she goes to the toiletin the middle of the night.
Tsukasa remains the center of attention, even as she paints a very serene picture listening to the sounds of a shell. Fairy tale moment shattered when a hermit crab crawls out from the shell.
Back home, Konata and Kagami talks about limited edition stuff. Why not just mark everything as limited edition! Since Japanese are suckers for limited edition stuff.
Asked to clean their rooms, the twin sisters dig out photo albums, which apparently include risque photos of their fathers. We also see Kagami as the dumping group of her older sister’s old clothes.
We finally meet Miyuki’s mom, who seems 100% like Miyuki. Since it’s not right to force Miyuki to visit the dentist, why not ask the dentist to make a home visit! Is how she thinks.
Lucky channel see Konata being introduced. Except this time Taniguchi is bullied right from the start. Taniguchi introduces Otaku from the previous generation, much to Akira’s chagrin. This soon leads to a rant about her horrible life as an idol.
The ED this time is Tsukasa singing Valentine Kiss by Sayuri Kokusho. Except you have Konata interrupting constantly with some very nice “harmonizing”.
Thoughts
This has to be the best episode thus far, especially with the initial D scenes and the fairy tale moment by Tsukasa. This is how 4-koma should be adapted to anime. Adding in many nice scenes, and not just flash joke after joke.
The momentum thus is going strong, and even the animation quality is up this time. While Lucky star doesn’t really need it, Kyoani continues to shine in areas like the initial D animation, + many other backgrounds. Lovely.
