Lucky Star - ep5 - New Director

Not sure if it’s just me, but with the new director, the jokes are more well paced, definitely funnier as well. No more of flipping the next scene before you even comprehend the joke. The characters didn’t seem as cute anymore though. (not crucial)

Summer holidays! Sensei being sensei, gives sagely advice about keeping out of trouble. Of course, it’s just so that her vacation won’t be cut short by any problems with her students.

Summer holidays means one has got to plan for activities. Unfortunately for Konata, she’ll still meet Kuroi-sensei everyday though. In online MMO that is. Long rattle on MMO that’s totally greet to Konata and Tsukasa.

Summer = Hot. Fanning is just a temporary solution. Since fanning is tiring as well.

Summer = Yukata. Yukata involves tying of ribbons… (tough job) Kagami and Tsukasa has theirs pre-tied. Even Miyuki needed to have hers tied in the store. Not Konata though. Hers is tied by her dad. (weirdly tied though)

We finally see the introduction of cousin Yui. The totally cute policewomen in the OP. She initially thought that Konata were hanging out with some real old gals. (size reflects age no?) After being corrected, she proceeds to rationalize that some girls now reach puberty faster. (taking Konata as the benchmark)

Of course policewomen are all sharpshooters right? Perfectly at home at festivals to shoot stuff. Cept she uses a pistol normally, not a rifle. She gets “saved” when her colleague arrives to drag her back to patrol.

This leaves Konata to do the shooting, where you get any prize that you succeed in shooting. Of course Konata chooses to shoot the handsome guy manning the stall instead.

Next sees Tsukasa being the only one who can answer the origins to “Blue hawaii” the drink. When you’re learning from Tsukasa, you know you’ve really failed.

Where’s the summer romance!

Kagami flicks off some cotton candy off Tsukasa’s nose, and proceeds to lick it. What is normally real sexy becomes something boring to Konata when performed by two girls. (debatable hoho).

Anyway, Kagami somehow manages to catch a goldfish, even though every single fish was swimming away from her. She looks like she’s going to take real good care of it.

Of course Kuroi sensei is roaming around the festival all by herself too. NO ROMANCE. Cousin Yui sees them and straight away assumes that Kuroi is a classmate with super puberty. *wrong* Anyway, Kuroi sensei is very happy that Yui is by herself too. (except that Yui’s reason is that her husband works faraway)

Much nagging about summer homework. Kagami nags Tsukasa. Even Konata is not spared when she meets Kuroi-sensei online and gets nagged about homework.

Time to gather together to do homework. Arriving at Kagami’s house, and seeing an electric fan, Konata’s first reaction is of course to talk funnily into it. Tsukasa later arrives and does the same thing. Kagami scolds them for being childish, until her dad reveals that she did the exact same thing earlier in the morning.

Konata tries to borrow homework to copy, but gets rebuffed. But Kagami agrees to answer any questions she have. But after Konata starts asking for help for EVERY QUESTION, konata gets chased home without being helped at all.

Cousin Yui pays a visit to Konata’s house. Konata of course asks for help in her homework. Yui readily agrees, but after taking a look (and realizing that she can’t do any), gives sagely police-type advice that Yui helping won’t benefit Konata.

But Konata ends up dying without helps. Yui ends up giving very non-police advice, that the answers don’t really matter. Konata just needs to hand the homework up right.

Konata ends up playing online games. What started as a 30 min break ends up as an all nighter after she picks up a super rare item. Of course the classic was Konata humming Bouken Deshou Deshou.

Lucky Channel sees Akira musing about her MMO experiences. How when she played it, many experience players gave her tips and many rare equipment.

Ending song is “Cha-La Head-Cha-La,” the original DRAGON BALL Z theme song.

Thoughts

I quite enjoyed this episode. Especially the pacing of the jokes. Really much better.

The introduction of more characters also made the whole setting much livelier and funny, less mundane.

And finally the different jokes actually link more coherently into one episode. Favorite moment should be when Konata hums into the fan. Even though you know she was soooo going to do it. The timing was just perfect though.

Ponytails are great. Konata+Yukata+Ponytail = killer combination

I guess more people would enjoy the series now.

    It’s just you.
I’m prety sure that if the news of director change wouldn’t be public, this’d be another scathing piece (focusing on the MMO scene or something other).

Not really. If you bothered to read through my past reviews, I actually praised some episodes, and panned those that I didn’t like.

And I believe the pacing is obviously different. *quite fair*
