If you asked me, Lucky star pretty much retained everything from last week. It didn’t get worse, but it didn’t get much better. Except for the tons of obscure anime reference placed every where. If you are a true blue otaku, you’ll be drooling excitedly about how you spotted all of them.

Story 1: Life of the two sisters. They pretty much spend their golden week playing together. Except that whenever Kagami is doing homework, Tsukasa is sleeping.

Story 2: Life of the two slackers. Konata is seen constantly playing computers. Tsukasa is seen trying, but failing, to follow her schedule to do homework. End result? Homework not done = Must copy from Kagami

Story 3: Introduction of a funky teacher. Except that she isn’t funny at all. Konata gives punchline about how she tried to enjoy her holidays to the max too, just like the teacher.

Story 4: Arcade. Never mess with an otaku at the arcade. First Kagami gets totally pawned trying those Softtoy crane games. She gets suckered into playing after seeing Konata do it so easily. Except she goes bankrupt without getting anything. Tsukasa is next, at the drum beat, but gets pwned too. And of course, Konata proceeds to pawn all strangers who challenge her at video fighting games.

Story 5: School results: Konata tries to skip school by offering may sickness (it exists in japan! really!) Of course it’s a bunch of nonsense. That aside, Kagami scores 86 of much mugging and studying. Guess which otaku scored 3 marks lower just by cramming on the final day.

Story 6: Dentist.Drills and pretty girls as nurse. Should be an A++ attraction to guys right? So thinks Konata. Every girl is afraid of the dentist though. Fantasy about how the dentist should be if catering to girls instead.

Story 7: Anime adaptation. Serious discussion on whether anime adaptations should use the same seiyuus as Drama CDs.

Story 8: Face making. Apparently, Konata is really skilled at making funny faces.

Story 9: Part time work! Konata needs money to finance her otaku lifestyle (which otaku doesn’t) Vitto it is. Where would she work! Not fast food… not manga shop… of course it must be a maid cafe!

Lucky Channel: Akira tries to act like the wonderful senpai, giving her assistant voice training. Kinda.

Thoughts

I went to catch some hidamari sketch.. just to have some level of comparison between 4-koma adaptations. I must say this… WhERE IS THE SEXY INSANE STUPID teacher. Even azumanga daioh had one. Lucky star on the other hand… had a not funny at all teacher.

Some jokes flash past waaaay too fast, blink and you’d have missed the punch line. Kyoani need animate the background characters though…. as usual… The use of haruhi songs made me bang my head though.

References include Shuffle… Haruhi…Keroro Gunsou, Taiko Drum Master, Galaxy Angel… various other things.. i didn’t spot them all.

I think Kyoani’s attention to detail might be causing the adaptation to fail a little. 4-koma just cannot be adapted wholesale. It’s just not meant to be!

I didn’t really laugh this time, though I knew where all the jokes were. I didn’t even go heeee.

My interest is totally sustained by Konata. But I would have thought that in this kind of genre, the laughs really have to come from every single character, not just Konata. The rest just seem a little too bland at the moment. Ah wellz. Still.. not too bad.
