Lucky Star - 01 - Very enjoyable!
Having read through some reviews, and comments, I wonder why all their reviews turned out that way. Tune your expectations correctly, remember that it’s an adaptation of a 4-koma, then enjoy it like you would love Azumanga Daioh.
The start introduces Konata as a very athletic girl. Just that her interests is focused on games and anime. (how very real) Together with Tsukasa, Konata soon starts a conversation about how to eat chocolate cream puffs, which gradually led to how to eat other kinds of food when Miyuki joined in. (I eat the same kinds of food, and probably had the same kind of discussions when i was young. but if there was a joke here, it flew right past me)
4-koma joke of a guy who locks up girls and forces them to call him goshujin-sama. Konata claims that there’s no deeper meaning, probably the guy just played too much galge and eroge. Now how does she know that as a high school girl.
Konata points out to Tsukasa that Miyuki is the epitome of moe. Totally. from thoughts to actions.
Kagami is sick with a cold. Tsukasa says it’s probably not influenza. Konata points out that it’s lucky that konata is stupid. (stupid ppl dont’ catch colds, so they shouldn’t catch influenza right?) Thus miyuki becomes to judge as to whether influenza is “upgraded cold”. The punch line is that Konata gets pissed that through the whole incident, Tsukasa didn’t disagree that Konata is stupid.
Konata comes to visit. Kagami is all happy and touched. But actually.. Konata just came over to copy homework.
Miyuki visits next, and she’s almost a perfect angel. Tsukasa didn’t realise there’s visitors though, and popped over to say hi to her sister Kagami, only to be horrified that a visitor would see her feeling so sleepy. The two end up having the most bimbotic chat though, to Kagami’s horror.
Physical health check. Kagami blames the weight gain on the ribbon on her bra. Tsukasa is horrified that she wore “mature undergarments” on physical health check day. Konata didn’t grow. Miyuki? Perfect score.
Kagami asks konata if she has any other friends. Yes… except that the middle high school best friend turned out to be some maniac as well. It seems that Konata and Tsukasa became best friends after Konata saves Tsukasa from a foreigner using street fight moves. Except that the foreigner was just asking for directions. More food chat after that!
I don’t know where this came from. But the joke’s about a idol who answers a question of how much money she gets. The answer became a rant about how her marketing company and parents take all her money.
The show ends with Konata singing ktv and a game theme song if i’m not wrong sentai (think power rangers) theme song (see comments). Behind closed doors.
Thoughts
This show is definitely not trying to seduce you with moe. Shows like Manabi straight and Sumomomo are. In fact, lucky star takes the otaku theme and makes plenty of fun and jokes at it.
The style is definitely Azumanga Daioh type, and you can really tell that it’s an adaptation from 4-koma. (the plot comes in small pieces. Enough to fit into 4 boxes in a comic i guess)
If Kyoani uses this to diversify its image, i’m all for it. I’m still impressed with the animation. (just compare it to something similar like Azumanga) Kyoani really brings out the comic feel, although some might say that it’s cheapening out on the animation. But I think there are styles that just suit different genres. In fact, I’m impressed that Kyoani seem to be doing well in adapting from all sorts of genre and material.
Other than the food discussion… the jokes were all very cute and subtle but funny to me. I smacked my forehead when “de arimasu” came out though. haha. Even the ktv part at the end was cute to me. Guess you need to go to KTV in an asian country to totally understand it.
Is this any like FMP or Haruhi or Kanon? No. Was this episode good? Definitely. People need to open their taste more.

The ED is not a game theme, but rather the OP from an old 70’s super sentai series called “Uchu Tetsujin Kyodain”:

Seeing how people are saying “Fuck ‘Moe Kyoto Animation’” I’m pretty sure some people don’t agree, still I’m glad that someone decided to look at this show with some common sense and not join the bandwagon and attack KyoAni in their best Rena Ryugu impression.

Personally.. i thought that review was one of the worse i read. Either that or people are getting warped ideas of moe. Wouldn’t kanon be considered more moe.
I don’t understand how people can criticise lucky star for poor quality and scold it for waste of resources at the same time.

It’s nice to see a review of Lucky☆Star that doesn’t turn into a rant about Kyoto Animation or Haruhi or Kanon or FMP. You’re probably also one of the very few people who seem to realize that this is a 4-koma adaptation. >.>

I liked the fact that you pointed out about how this is not really bad animation, but a different style for a different series. It’s good to see a balanced review rather than the usual hate.

The jokes get better towards the end of the first volume and at the start of the second.
I can’t wait until the debut of the blue haired man in the OP, the one who stares at high school girls with his index finger in his mouth. Heh heh heh…

I love this anime too! I’m an otaku like Kona-chan, aggressive like Kagamin, cutesy like Tsukasa, and a ‘walking dictionary’ and meganekko like Yuki-chan. And kawaiikko anime that talks about food? I’m addicted to it! I keep uploading pictures like I’m posessed!
