Manabi Straight! - ep 05
The animators gave in finally! They included fanservice! Though it was so short I couldn’t even get a screenshot of it. This episode deals with Mika’s trauma. Which surprisingly turns out to be…. Mei.
Manabi is sick with mumps. Thus hospitalisation for a week. It also leaves her rounder than ever. This means that the school council is left with Mei and Mika temporarily.
Things are awkard in the student council room. For Mika, Mei has always been alone at one side, and she resolves that this is a good opportunity to talk more together, and then eat dinner together at the end of the day. Plan fails. Mika doesn’t talk abit and Mei ends up leaving before she can do anything.
Thus emergency call to Mutsuki at night. Suggestions on common topics just reveal the massive difference between Mika and Mei. Finally, Mutsuki asks Mika to ask Momoha to help out. Plan fails as well, and the result is the same as previous day. Another call to Mutsuki, who is pretty irritated by now, being too busy to entertain such things. Dinner interrupts the call, but Mutsuki is surprised by another phone call from Mei herself.
Mika closes the school council room the next day, as Mei said she had some personnal matters to attend to. Mika thus remembers the trauma she’s going through as everybody thinks that she’s getting very close to Mei, when in fact, the whole experience was very trying.
On the way home, she bumps into a guy, who gives her the inspiration to write a letter to Mei instead. However, just as she enters the stationary shop (which was playing the ED as background music), she meets Mei there too. Much awkardness, before both say that they were going to write to Manabi.
At home, Mika obviously is dying. Her letter to Mei lies uncomplete. Her phone is left unanswered. In fact, she nearly didn’t feel like going to school the next day. That was until she recieves a letter to her. From Mei. Rushing to school, the ice between Mei and Mika is finally broken.

Commercial break. Interview of Manabi by a well prepared Momoha
Next daysees Shinomija telling the school council to think up a theme for the school festival. Mei knows that it’s actually the school teachers who need to be appeased by something proper, leading Mika to think Sensei betrayed them.

How could you take on another mistress!
Everybody wants to wait for Manabi to come back, but Mika suggests that they come up with one before she does.
Mei obviously integrates well into the school council, they all have the same habits now. But nobody can think up of a theme. Desperate, they even try running. That. of course does not work.
Thus sees an era of hardwork by the two. Which sees them working hard together, and cumulating to a star gazing night on the school roof.
Finally, Manabi returns, only to catch the two of them sleeping. She reads their proposal on the theme of school festival, and is so excited that she can’t stop shivering.
Meanwhile, we see a sleep Shimojima who obviously were looking after Mika and Mei while they sneaked into school and stayed overnight.
Thoughts
I love the theme of the school festivals. From friends to buddies. That’s what every Junior College in my school should be doing. Rather, they are all just interested in studying and churning out hardworking nerds.
Some might be bored with the repetitive presentation of the show in terms of story line. Same type of plot. Not me.
The cuteness still overwhelms me. The stories remain just as heartwarming. And the jokes still crack me up. Definitely one of my favorite series this spring.
I actually like Mika alot… mostly because of her expressions… especially her “anti Manabi” ones. Nice to see a different side of her this time round. (meaning the shots from home. haha)

I must have missed it or something. My impression was that they kept teasing with “nearly fanservice”, without quite doing it
