Manabi Straight! - ep 02
Straight Forward GO! This series would make the perfect recruitment tool for student council. Cuteness and Hilarity in the animation remain at a very top high, while the drama in the story is still there. Get your hearts filled with fuzziness!
So Manabi is now the new school council president, and she starts things off by shocking her brother with her new “school council president” look. Apparently the look doesn’t quite succeed.
Traveling to school, she starts off by totally embarrassing Mei after greeting her enthusiastically. Next thing sees Manabi greeting Mika in school. However, Manabi is reduced to tears when Mika doesn’t know how to respond to her “Go straight!” greeting at all.
Classes themselves are perfectly normal, with Mika cheered by an instant message from Manabi about cleaning up the school council room.
The cleaning of the school council room itself doesn’t go well though. Too many things to pack, too gentle a Mika and too enthusiastic a Manabi. Mutsuki who comes check on them at the end of the day can’t help laughing when she catches them simply slacking off. But in the end, Mutsuki herself too join them lying on top of the table slacking off, until Mei finally arrives to take control of things.
The packing sees the council setting up a garage sale in the middle of the school courtyard. Interest becomes humongous even though they are basically junk after the students find out that everything is selling for 50 yen. All in all, they earn close to 5000 yen, and receieve another 5000 yen from their teacher, who himself has to go hungry during lunch though.
Thus they need to decide on how to spend the money. But instead of eating or just doing a council room make over, Manabi decide that they need to do a full renovation. They thus bring their 10 000 yen and goes shopping for materials.
Even as renovations start, we see Mutsuki not quite successfully asking the carpentry club for help. But suddenly, the renovation works is broadcasted across the school’s network, where manabi makes a passionate plea on what she wants the place to be like. A cafe, a Haven where anybody can go, a place where people can relax and talk about Seiou.
Everybody is touched by what she says and soon offers of help start flooding in.
Thoughts
So heartwarming!! I still can’t help but want to cheer manabi on.
Most things are done well thus far, little things like the amateur camera angle and the OP itself. The series also threatens to spill over into fanservice without actually quite doing it.
Ok, we really do need new seiyuus though. I keep having images of Ayu from Kanon flash in front of me every-time I see Manabi. Hirano is doing well as Mei’s seiyuu though.
I hope this series doesn’t disappoint, it IS showing lots of promise.
I wonder what the visiting school council president was so shocked by at the end though.

the OP sounds like some 80s american comedy/drama tv show, but i really like the animation!
