Utawarerumono - First impressions

I’ve watched up to ep 7 so far.

The anime takes place in a world where the people look almost like human beings, but with elfish ears, and a tail. Eruru, granddaughter of the village elder, rescues a masked man one day. Not only has he lost his memories, but he also has a mask on his face that he just can’t get off. Mysterious enough for you?

Through a series of incidents, the guy, (now named Hakuoro), is accepted into the village, and also becomes the village elder. Yet misfortune occurs, and the village is forced to rebel against it’s emperor. Eventually, they do win, but this is simply the start of the story.

mmm… the first thing I thought of when watching the anime was samurai 7. The animation was of the same top notch quality, and the story takes place in similar village-type setting. But I do like utawarerumono more. It’s also similar to juuni kokki, although juuni kokki remains as one of my top favorites.

As mentioned. the animation is top notch. The OP and ED are also very “gentle” in feeling, gentle and soothing. Very fitting for the type of anime this is. However, there were a few scenes there were recycled, and during the battle scenes, the combination of CG and traditional animation style just didn’t fit well together. Minus one pt here.
Story line… seems quite unbelievable at times. The village seemed to go on a rebellion without thinking much of the consequences. At the same time, you have a most incredibly stupid emperor, who seems to be doing all he can to persuade more villages to join in the rebellion.

But the anime is still very enjoyable, and addictive. There were definitely much hilarious moments to watch for involving eruru, which were just utterly hilarious. I bet you’ll share the same sentiments when you watch them as well.

While not one of the top ranked anime around, there haven’t been much anime of this genre, and this anime is fairly enjoyable. Definitely worth watching

p.s. the cat sure grew up real fast
