Ouran High School Host Club - ep 20

Oops. This episode turned out better then I thought. Although it was all serious and little humor, I thought the main idea of the story conveyed very well. I wonder how many of us identify with the twins, being totally condratictory creatures ourselves.

On a winter day, the twins have asked a girl to guess between them again. There’s stunned silence as she makes her choice. It doesn’t show what happens next though, in fact, we have kaoru reflecting on how the twins have always been a single entity.

Fast forward to 8 yrs later, a girl has written a love letter to Hikaru. Hikaru, acting as kaoru, meets up with the girl. Saying that she had put the letter in the wrong desk, Hikaru reveals that he has always thought of the girl as cute. Saying that Hikaru always likes other girls, would the girl choose Kaoru instead. The girl agrees. But then, Hikaru calls out the real kaoru, revealing that he is actually Hikaru. Bursting into tears, the girl calls them cruel. But the twins proceed to insult her hairstyle, and tear apart her love letter. In the end, it is left to Tamaki to console the girl.

In class, the twins reveal how they get tired of something very quickly, and when they do, they end up throwing it away. Meanwhile, their classmates are talking behind their back, especially about how the twins have never liked anybody but themselves. But actually, there was one person that they have liked in the past.

Back 10 years ago, the twins are dressed in pink and blue blouse. Meanwhile, a lady comes forward and guesses that the one in blue was Hikaru. WRONG. The lady tries to explain that it’s hard to guess since they look so identical. The twins reply was that the lady is identical to a frog as well. Taking out a frog, the frog jumps onto the lady, causing her to faint. One of the maids comes over to help the lady.

The maid was the one person the twins liked, mostly because she didn’t just always flatter them. But one night, they catch her trying to break open the house’s safe. The maid threatens them with a knife, but stops when the twins reveal an alarm that would call all the guards. However, holding out a note with the safe’s combination, they want the maid to play “guess who is hikaru” game. Going to bed, they feel safe, hiding the note in their piggy bank. They seriously wanted the maid to guess correctly as they liked her.

But they end up waking to the house alarms. Next they see the maid climbing down a rope ladder attached to the wall. The twins accuse her of breaking her promise. But the maid replies that she has no choice, as they are too identical. In fact, she believes that nobody will ever be able to tell them apart. Actually, she had broken apart their piggy bank in the middle of the night. After she disappears, Kaoru notes that because of this incident, they grew up kinda twisted.

By middle school, they have build up a sort of personal barrier that prevented people from approaching them. Well, except for stupid who can’t recognise the barrier. Well… Tamaki comes along, and invites them to join the club that he is starting next year in high school. Kaoru recognises him as the guy who joined the school last year, from the chats that he hears from the girls in class. This makes Tamaki fantasise about how famous he is.

Tamaki mentions about the people he has gotten to join already, but this makes the twins think that he just wants to form a club with many important families, and wants to add their family name in. However, they issue a challenge to Tamaki, to guess who is who, with a one month dateline. Tamaki accepts, as long as they join his club if he succeeds.

Back in class, a female classmate is asking the twins to join in the end of year class party, which they refuse to. But Tamaki barges in, and starts guessing who is who, offering all sorts of wrong reasons. The girl then interrupts about the class party again, and Tamaki promtly proceeds to sign both twins up for it. This pisses the twins off, who both walk away.

Tamaki goes back to his own classroom, where kyoya is reading a book. Tamaki complains to Kyoya, but kyoya doesn’t really care if the twins join the club or not. Tamaki complains that if the twins want people to distinguish between them, they should just have different hairstyles. Kyoya’s reply is that maybe they DON’T want to be differentiated. But in that case, Tamaki thinks that they should not be playing such a game. Kyoya replies that maybe they DO want to be differentiated. Tamaki goes ARGH. Kyoya’s obviously only 1/2 listening to him.

Next day, Tamaki goes to the twins’ house to guess who is who, wrongly again of course. Ignoring him, the twins continue on to school in their car. While they think Tamaki is very funny, since he acts like a feudal lord, they are actually getting tired of the game. Thus in school, when Tamaki confronts them again, they accuse Tamaki of being the lonely one instead. They reveal that having checked up on Tamaki, they found out that his biological mum is missing, and they are sure Tamaki wouldn’t want this information to spread around.

In the classroom, kaoru reveals that they actually wanted Tamaki to play along a little more. But they are also very tired of the game. Actually, they are very contradictory people. The twins have always wanted someone to accept them, to accept them as twisted as they are. But there’s no one like that, so in order to stay in their own world, they put a very strong lock on their gate.

They spot another girl who wrote a love letter again to them, so they play the same game again. But just as Hikaru is about to tear up the love letter, Tamaki jumps up and identifies the correct twin. When asked for the reason, Tamaki can only say that it’s gut feeling.

Actually, Tamaki still can’t tell them apart. But to him, the similarity is a strength, and they should play it up as the “two in one” brothers. But at the same time, they shouldn’t lose their own individuality. And so, Tamaki will continue to try and learn to differentiate them. The twins say that what Tamaki is saying in contradictory. But Tamaki throws back and claims that arn’t the twins contradictory too, and it’s their nature. But the twins don’t want to be seen as one set always. Besides, they know honestly that nobody is able to guess who’s the correct twin. Then why do they look so sad whever somebody gets the answer wrong, Tamaki says.

Remembering the winter scene at the start, the girl had actually got the wrong answer. But she tells him not to cry. In fact, Kaoru realises that they must have looked pretty sad when she gave the wrong answer. Tamaki says that though he cannot guess correctly, if they stay in their own world, they’ll never be able to find the person who can.

Fast forward to the next year, it’s Haruhi’s first day in school. Kyoya is also walking along the pathway, and coincidentally, both looked up to the sky. In the classroom, Honey and Mori are reflecting on joining the club, and how it’ll work out in the end. All end up looking at the clocktower as it rings.

On the very day of the opening ceremony, the Twins open up the room to the Third Music Room.

Thoughts

I don’t know. But there are times when I do things trying to attract attention. Yet there are better ways to do it, but I don’t want to be too obvious about it. Quite silly actually. But I can’t understand what the twins are going through, even though they seemed pretty evil as the start.

Well.. there is a good ending. They did find haruhi in the club. So all things end well
