Ouran High School Host Club – ep 18

Whenever haruhi becomes just a sideshow in an episode, it gets super boring. And for most part, so was this episode, until the very end before I actually starting laughing. Mori totally underestimated Honey-senpai’s desire to eat cake.

At the start, a boy in front of the music room asks haruhi about the whereabouts of honey. Before she can answer, he pops out of the door together with Mori, calling out “chika-chan”. Chika immediately launches a kick at Honey, but honey leaps away. At this point, Renge appears as a commentator to the fight that continues. Chika starts using a metal pole, and seemingly knocks Honey unconscious. But from an instant replay of the fight, Honey had obviously knocked the pole aside, and at the same time pinned chika to the ground with shurikens.

Surprisingly, Tamaki reveals that Chika is Honey’s younger brother, and this is something they do as a greeting each time they see each other. Chika explains that everybody in his family goes out to learn karate and Judo. And According to him, the Haninozuka family admonishes selfishness and aims at selflessness. Accordingly, his brother with his love for cakes and sweet is not fit to be the head of the family.

Apparentyl honey was in the karate club previously, and haruhi presses for the what happened, and why he is in the host club. Honey was known as the demon captain, but people made many remarks about his height. Following his father’s advise, honey abandoned sweets and cakes and worked even harder to appear strict and manly.

However, during one training, Honey was enticed out of the dojo by a bunny. It was tamaki, who wanted honey to join the host club. Tamaki commented that true strength is admitting what you like and facing it, instead of hiding it away.

Going homey, honey told his father that he wanted to train alone. But his dad wanted to show him what the idea of true strength is, so they dueled. In the end, honey won, with his father hospitalised for ages. Afterwards, honey joins the host club. Chika became the karate captain later on, and continues to hate Honey. Tamaki decides that there should be a plan to reconcile them.

In the karate dojo, Chika is being an even stricter captain, and insist that everybody does not mention about honey. He gets upset when a bunch of girls outside mention about Honey too. This caused the twins to comment that Chika probably just has a complex, and decides not to participate in any plans, because it’s boring. Tamaki is not happy about that, but honey says that he is ok with Chika hating him, as long as he grows up well.

They say all this within earshot of Chika, who reveals why he hates Honey. In actual fact, he is scared of honey and believes Honey is an alien. In fact, everybody would think so if they saw how much cakes honey consumed at home. However, the 2 brothers used to get along well, until some guy came along came along and told honey stuff about true strength and acknowledging what you like. Tamaki is horrified to discover the strife between brothers is actually his fault.

Mori pats honey and says there is a way to settle all this. He apologises for not knowing that chika hates cakes (which is not the case), and says that they should settle everything with a fight. If Chika wins, Honey will stop eating cake. The fight takes place in an open field, and seems to be a direct opposite of what happens in the first fight.

Mori comments in a knowing tone that honey has always known that chika always uses the fighting styles that honey used in the previous fight. Mori also comments this is intentional, and helps Chika to grow. Correspondingly, as expected, Chika throws shuriken at Honey. Believing he knows Honey best, Mori says all will turn out alright, since honey will purposely lose to Chikan. Unexpectedly, Honey straight away defeats Chika with a kick the very next moment, leaving Mori devestated.

It ends with Honey declaring his love for Usa-Chan.

Thoughts

I was expecting Honey to lose to, although i didn’t know how to reconcile it with his love for cake. As compared to the manga, a large funny part got taken out (Mori’s younger brother), so this episode got quite boring actually.

Bring back haruhi! she shouldn’t just be a side show!
