Honey and Clover - A review

Well. The second season is out this summer. So I though I’ll catch the first season first. I don’t normally watch soap operas, you know, the kind shown on tv. Usually it’s too draggy or what not. But Honey n Clover surpassed all my expectations.

(ah yes. I know that’s a image for 2nd season)

For a feel of how the style of the anime is like, here are 2 clips I uploaded onto youtube.

You know, as someone who just stepped out of adolescent and into the adult world, the anime somehow just seems to reach out to me. And even as the series focused on relationship issues, it just seemed to continue to pull at me, and making me sigh.

An anime that makes you laugh, yet cry the next moment. It’s simple in it’s development, yet every character is so complex. It’s an anime about making choices in life, and of course, about romance.

i wonder if watching the anime made me more sentimental. The adolescent that seems to be heading nowhere, and generally depressing. Yet there will always be moments of joy and happiness.

And that’s the magic of the anime, dragging you on together with the story, yet always with the right dash of humor at the perfect moment.

Animation wise, it reminds me of NANA. However, the blend between the realistic drawing of characters, and the cartoony versions is a lot better, and really adds to the humor value. With the background of the story being an art college, the animation of the scenery is really suitable, really looking like water color paintings.

Very cute OP! The series is anchored by only a few songs, but all used very appropriately. In addition and uniquely, it frequently has insert songs taken from some very old songs, yet very soothing and suitable.

Haha. Sometimes it’s just so painful to watch reminding me of my younger days. Anyway, very good anime. I can perfectly understand why it’s the favorite anime series for many people. It’s just very unique and stands on it’s own.

As someone who just graduated from university, this series still managed to really tug at my heartstrings. And yeah, I agree the sentimentality is a big draw for this series… Thank goodness for the 2nd season…
